A new study, by researchers from Columbia University, shows that a popular prescription drug, Viagra, can boost the natural production of the penis, leading to its use for sexual arousal.
The study, published Monday in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine,addressed the question: How safe are Viagra? In the study, researchers tested sildenafil (sold as Viagra), a commonly used drug for erectile dysfunction, for its effects on blood flow to the penis. They found that the drug's effect on the blood flow was similar to that of Viagra, and the effect was stronger for the men who took the drug.
Viagra has been on the U. S. market for more than a decade. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is available in both generic and brand names. Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is the only FDA-approved drug that can be taken in a daily dose or as needed.
In the study, researchers looked at blood flow in blood vessels in the penis. These vessels are called cavernosal blood vessels. During sexual arousal, blood flow to the penis increases. During sexual stimulation, blood flow increases, which results in blood flow into the penis. When blood flow in the penis is blocked, the blood vessels in the penis dilate and relax, allowing more blood to flow into the penis.
The researchers also looked at the effects of Viagra on the penile nerves. During sexual arousal, there are two types of blood vessels. These are called myelinated and non-myelinated, and these nerves are still there. During arousal, blood flow is increased by stimulation of the penis. When blood flow is blocked, myelinated nerves are not there. Because these nerves are less sensitive than non-myelinated nerves, the penis can still produce more blood flow. In other words, sex is more enjoyable when there is sexual arousal.
The researchers found that men who took Viagra experienced increased blood flow to the penis. That's why they called for a stronger effect on blood flow in the penis.
"Viagra has long been used to treat erectile dysfunction and has been shown to have some promise as a treatment for that condition," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, who wrote the study in response to a request for comment from the U. Department of Health and Human Services.
Wolfe and his co-authors wrote a letter to the editor requesting the paper be revised.

Last month, Pfizer announced it would pay $4.3 million to settle lawsuits filed by men who claimed Pfizer's drug-makers were misleading consumers.
